How to care for baby's sensitive skin?

Newborns have very delicate and sensitive skin. Babies skin is more sensitive because it is approx 30% thinner than adults skin. This means that their skin had less layers and can be irritated easily. Their skin also loses moisture easier, causing dry skin and irritation. Taking care for your baby's skin can be very tricky because different products will work for different babies.

For the first few weeks it is recommended to use plain almond oil after bath. It is more than enough to hydrate baby's skin. Almond oil will contain no chemicals or perfumes that may irritate baby's skin.

Within few days of coming home from the hospital your baby's skin may start to peel and this is completely normal. While the baby is in the uterus, it is covered with different fluid and vernix. Vernix is thick, oily layer that protects your baby from amniotic fluid. Some skin flaking is normal for approx. 3 weeks after birth. Just keep your baby's skin moisturised by applying some almond oil after the bath.

If your baby's skin is still peeling after few weeks after birth and the skin seems irritated, you should contact your doctor. Peeling may be caused by one of the conditions such as eczema or dermatitis. Eczema and dermatitis would require special skincare products.

Eczema is skin condition that causes red, dry and itchy patches on skin. It usually doesn't occur in infants. However, it may develop over time. Eczema can be caused by many different factors. It is often caused by shampoos, detergents, dairy products and wheat (common alergens).

If your baby seems to have simply drier than normal skin then purchase some moisturising cream or lotion. There are many different brands offering skincare products for babies. You should choose one that contains no perfume, alcohol and parabens. It is important to use products that are natural. My baby has very sensitive and dry skin and the products that work for her are:

1. La Roche-Possay Lipikar Baume AP+ Lotion
